The e-newsletter will be sent every Wednesday morning to help you organize your busy life. We will also send e-blasts or short e-mails with urgent and timely reminders.
Directory
The Sage Canyon School PTA Student Directory can be an invaluable tool to learn classmates’ names, contact friends and keep track of the important people in your life! Every Sage Canyon staff member is listed with a phone number and contact email address. You will find the directory so useful you’ll want one for your car as well! Join the PTA by September 30 in order to be included.
Spirit Wear
Demonstrate school spirit through Sage Canyon Coyote Spirit Wear! A complete assortment of hats, t-shirts, sweatshirts and more is available each fall. This year, Spirit Wear will be sold during the week of September 8-12. Remember, every Friday is School Spirit Day!

Morning Assisted Drop-Off / Safe Routes to School
This program advocates safe routes to school for all students, regardless of their mode of transportation. Maps, signs and volunteer greeters in our Morning Assisted Drop-Off/Pick-Up Zones help accomplish this goal and provide a safe and efficient way to begin the day! Remember to obey all traffic signs and drive slowly when our children are coming and going from school!

PTA Sponsored Assemblies
The Sage Canyon School PTA strives to enhance the curriculum and social environment at school. One way we accomplish this is through special assemblies for our kids. This year we are proud to announce that “Retro Bill” will be coming to Sage Canyon in October!!! And, later in the year, we are excited for the return of the Imagination Machine – which was a huge hit last March. We will even have an Imagination Machine parent show so you can watch the fun, too!!!

Playground Partners
This important program makes a huge difference to our students but it only works when we have you to help us. Sage Canyon School PTA, the Ecke YMCA and school staff are breaking down traditional school walls and extending the curriculum outside. By providing fun outdoor instruction that models teamwork, sportsmanship, conflict resolution and respect for others, the playground has become a valuable resource. Our school is assigned a professional field manager who designs and implements developmentally age appropriate games and activities specific to Sage Canyon students. We need parent volunteers to model positive social skills and encourage inclusion of children in playground activities. It’s fun and it’s easy, so sign up now!
Dad's Club
Our Sage Canyon Dads are an instrumental group of caring, talented and generous parents that want to be involved in their children’s education. Dad’s Club organizes several opportunities for dads to participate in classroom and lunchtime visits. (Of course, moms and grandparents are also welcome!) We can count on our Dads to be creative and fun!
International Walk to School Day
Celebrating International Walk to School Day has become a tradition in the Del Mar Union School District! Bring the entire family and come walk to Sage Canyon on October 8. Join us as we bring the community together to create safety and community awareness. A bagel breakfast follows the event thanks to our infamous Dad’s Club!
Red Ribbon Day
On Red Ribbon Day, October 10, we help educate our kids about making healthy choices that do not involve alcohol, cigarettes and other drugs. A special assembly (Chris Rubio Production Group – percussion movement performers) and activities are planned to encourage healthy living under the theme: “I believe in me, Drug Free”.
Fall Festival
Bring in autumn at the Fall Festival! This harvest themed event will take place on October 19 and is loaded with fun for the entire family! Carnival games and prizes, a pumpkin walk, food, and much, much more start the fun! Come hang out with family and friends; enjoy the music and fellowship that makes Sage Canyon School so special! This is always our largest “Family Event of the Year”! A special thank you goes out in advance to the 40+ member Fall Festival Committee and hundreds of parent volunteers needed to make this event happen!

Reflections
Reflections is a National PTA program designed to encourage our children to explore and experience the fine arts through literature, art and music. Each year a theme is announced, and all entries must interpret the theme. The theme for ’08-’09 is “WOW!” Encourage your child to explore his or her creative abilities! A formal reception will be held for all participants.
Family Nights
Several times each school year, PTA members and school staff collaborate to organize theme-based family nights. This year we are pleased to host: Academic Night, Science Fair Night, Family Trivia Night and Night Under the Stars. Please join us for all four evenings!
Restaurant Nights
Come to dinner as a Sage Canyon family! Restaurant Night is a great way to meet other families and support our school at the same time! Restaurants donate a portion of the night’s Sage Canyon receipts back to us! Look for dates in the e-newsletter.
Character Counts
PTA’s Character Counts program is designed to support a character education emphasis at Sage Canyon. Our children’s positive behavior is encouraged monthly through themes and special promotions both in and outside of the classroom. Look for our Considerate Coyote Jar in the Office. Once it is full of the colored marbles that represent the 6 Pillars of Character, we celebrate with a party!
Garden Club
Come visit Sage Canyon’s courtyard and see what our parents and students have cultivated! There are butterflies, hummingbirds, insects and of course flowers and even vegetables that attract these lovely creatures. If you have a green thumb and would love to share your passion, Garden Club is the place for you.

Road Runners
Do you have a child with a lot of energy? Do you have a child that needs to be reminded to slow down? Well, Road Runners is the perfect way to spend lunch recess. Through extensive parent volunteer support, our kids can literally RUN on Monday and Fridays during lunch recess. Miles are accrued and students are recognized for their accomplishments. This is a wonderful opportunity to stay fit and expend a little extra energy before returning to class.
5th & 6th Grade Leadership Initiative
This program is designed to give our 5th and 6th graders an opportunity to positively interact with our younger students and school community. Our students apply for jobs and school staff serves as “supervisors” and on the job trainers. Most jobs take place during recess and before school. Some examples include: Library Assistant, Technology Aide and Study Buddy. The PTA is very excited about giving our students an opportunity to experience both the rights AND responsibilities that come with “employment”.
Box Tops for Education
Collect Box Tops for Education labels that you find on General Mills, Pillsbury, Betty Crocks and Ziploc products! This is a great way for these corporations to give back to our school community! Keep your scissors handy before you recycle. The Box Tops for Education collection box is in the school office.
Classroom Mini Grants
The PTA supports our teachers by the annual giving of mini-grants to supplement their classroom needs and curriculum. The Sage Canyon School PTA emphasizes using funds for materials that support a hands-on approach to involving parents in the process of teaching and learning. The financial success of our Fall Festival helps determine allocation levels for these mini-grants.
Healthy Choices Day
Nutrition, exercise and safe sun practices are the main theme. Our Dad’s Club Healthy Brown Bag Lunch is on also on this fun-filled day which will be held on January 16.

Jog-A-Thon
The Jog-a-Thon is a PTA event where children earn support for laps that they run! Our children jog to fun music and are treated to a cool snack while earning money to support PTA sponsored programs and events! It’s great fun for all! Come run with your kids on April 1.
Night Under the Stars
Everyone is a STAR! Celebrate a successful year at Sage Canyon at our annual dinner with the stars (our own Sage Canyon Star students). This is a night for families to celebrate our children’s accomplishments and get together with friends. This is also the evening where we introduce and install our new PTA Executive Board members. There is great food, fun and dancing as we thank our “Stars” and start planning for the fall!
Teacher Appreciation Week
Help us celebrate our fabulous teachers and staff at Sage Canyon with Teacher Appreciation Week. Every teacher and staff member becomes a special part of our children’s lives. For this reason we dedicate an entire week to celebrate them and say “Thank You”!
Back to School Supplies
If you missed the opportunity to save time and place your order for this year, mark your calendar for May to be ready for next year! The PTA and Sage Canyon staff collaborate to help take the headache out of Back to School shopping by pre-ordering everything for you! Supply packs are delivered and waiting on your child’s desk on the FIRST day of school!

Study Buddies
Sage Canyon School PTA has partnered with the San Dieguito Alliance to provide high school mentors for a select group of our children that could benefit from a special relationship. Students meet after school one day a week in our library to do homework together and have some fun.
Dad’s Club Field Day
Sage Canyon children love to have their dads visit school! June 9 will be a very exciting day as our Dad’s Club organizes a fun-filled day of games! Moms can come and enjoy the fun too, but we let the Dads be in charge of a day.
Yearbook
The memories created at Sage Canyon last a lifetime and are forever recorded in this special book. Children and volunteers work together throughout the year to create this treasure. Pictures are always appreciated!
